White Water Award (Training & Assessment)

2nd & 3rd February 2019

The White Water Award will give you the ability to apply your choices to a successful day on rivers of up to Grade 2, supporting you in the understanding and use of the fundamentals in white water paddling. Learning how to cross a flow, changing and maintaining direction, running the river, as well as looking at the factors which affect our decisions on where and when to go out paddling.

 The day will be spent on a river journey focusing on developing and assessing boat handling skills, river reading skills and your ability to apply trip planning theory to the river environment. We will cover incident management including swimming in whitewater, getting someone back in their boat after a capsize, self-rescue skills, paddling as a group, communication, safety equipment, throw line, slings harness etc and tidying up any areas that arise over the course of the day. At the end of the day, we will debrief, feedback and action plan.​​

PaddleSport Instructor Training & Assessment

The NEW Paddlesport Instructor is aimed at those taster/starter sessions and short journeys in very sheltered water environments, within the safety management systems of clubs/centres or other organisations.

The qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration.  This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.  

The process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’.  

The qualification will cover a range of stable craft including kayak (this can be open-cockpit or closed-cockpit), open canoe, sit on top and stand up paddleboard. Candidates will be certificated in one craft but able to instruct a mixed fleet.

To attend the course you need to have:

  • Full Home Nation Membership

  • Registered with Home Nation as a Paddlesport Instructor Candidate (Visit cani,org.uk) 

  • Completed Foundation Safety and Rescue Training

  • Developed Personal Paddling and Rescue Competence in your preferred craft

Paddlesport Leader Training

7th & 8th and 16th & 17th February 2019

 

The Paddlesport Leader qualification is suitable for people taking on formal leadership responsibilities in sheltered water. The primary role of the Paddlesport Leader is to lead, to supervise, or facilitate safe, quality enjoyable trips based on their group's needs and aspirations. The training focuses on learning through experience. We anticipate the qualification is likely to be used by leaders in clubs, leaders for providers/centers who offer paddlesport activity, commercial paddlesport guides, leaders in schools, youth groups etc.

The Leader Training qualification is designed such that the leader can choose the craft from which they work and can look after others in both single disciple and mixed fleets  This 2 day training course is a great way to prepare for the Assessment and becoming a leader.

BCU Sea Kayak Award 

9th & 10th February 2019

The Sea Kayak Award endorses your skill, judgment and the decision making required for a successful day on the sea. 

You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys on the sea, in winds up to and including force 3 and/or tides up to 1 Knot, using sea kayaks or sit on tops, in tidal or non-tidal environments, with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for building the experience and knowledge associated with Coastal Sea Kayak Award holders.

The White Water Kayak Leader course content emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations, and covers the following:

  • Part A – Personal Paddling Skills

  • Part B – Rescue Skills

  • Part C – Safety, Leadership & Group Skills

  • Part D – Theory

White Water Safety & Rescue Course 

23rd & 24th March 2019

After completing Foundation Safety and Rescue it is normal practice to complete White Water Safety and Rescue.

 

This Two Day training on moving water and learning how to swim, rescue boats and different approaches to different situations that may arise.

 

The training will be in grade 2 - 3 Water.

Level 2 Power Boat Training RYA 

next date 30th & 31st March 2019

 

This two-day entry-level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat.

It focuses on low-speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at Speed, and collision regulations.

The type of skills you will be learning are launch and recovery, boat preparation, basic boat handling, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside, man overboard, high-speed manoeuvres, introduction to navigation and a lot more!
